Helen needs a mysterious door in the farmhouse she inherited from her uncle unlocked. She summons Courtney, a locksmith, who has been hearing voices that compel him to steal the Civil War-era guns from the house. The voice is probably Charlotte, the ghost of a formerly enslaved person, who has been trapped in this house since John Brown’s Harper’s Ferry raid went south and has contented herself with watching television and plotting her escape. When the basement door is unlocked, Charlotte, Courtney, and Helen’s destinies become irrevocably and explosively linked.

Make no mistake, “Safe Space” is a comedy. Its racially charged leitmotif manifests more cheeky than preachy, à la “An Octoroon”.
