A crowd-pleaser that bridges gaps

The FOLKS AT HOME

6 actors // 2 hours

Roger and Brandon, an interracial couple living in South Baltimore, are doing the best they can. Their mortgage is late, Roger’s been laid off for months, and there might be a ghost in the attic. It’s a lot. When Brandon’s mom and Roger’s parents fall on even harder financial times and are forced to move in with the struggling couple, the blended family must figure out how to share space and how to survive. The Folks at Home is a sharp and heartfelt comedy in the style of Norman Lear’s classic sitcoms of the 70s and 80s.

The tone may be wildly different, but Thomas is traversing terrain that Arthur Miller placed on the theatrical map more than half a century ago. Thomas has composed a comedy of downward mobility that astutely wraps multiple disappointments in sitcom bonhomie.

Thomas’ script is witty and real even as he draws on the influence of vintage TV shows such as “The Jeffersons.”
